Introduction

 Wine is great fun as well as being an industry and big business. Finding interesting wines and enjoying them with friends is one of the pleasures of life, which we do as often as possible. We recently tasted six clarets a white Burgundy and a Pouilly Fumé over lunch and most of the wines were over 30 years old - what an experience. One of the things we discussed was the prospect of opening an '82 Mouton Rotschild with a screw or crown cap closure. Not very exciting we felt. On the other hand, over 90% of wine is drunk within two years of bottling and it may be that for younger wines these modern closures will be the best way of keeping wine in the way the winemaker wants you to taste it. We don't yet have any of these closures, though there are various synthetic 'corks', but with New Zealand, Australia and California leading the way, expect some to occur soon
Our Champagne collection and wine list generally have put us into the final of the Gossard Champagne wine list of the year finals. The results will be announced in September at an award ceremony in London and we are delighted to have been invited to attend and recognised in this way. Although selecting wines is a great pleasure, it is also hard work. Still, someone has to do it!
What would we recommend for the summer? Try The Quinta da Franqueira Vinho Verde or the Redoma Rosado, both from Portugal. The new House wine, Todu, is a super fresh Summer wine and Fleurie is a Summer favourite (straight from the cellar for me!). For a special treat, what about the Vilmart Grand Cellier d'Or Rubis? Blow the cost, it's a celebration!
